Five O'Clock Somewhere
Welcome to Five O'Clock Somewhere, where it doesn't matter what time zone you're in; it's five o'clock somewhere. We'll look at rural life, especially as it happens in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, cats, sailing (particularly Etchells racing yachts), and bits of grammar and Victorian poetry.

Groan.... at least sailing was mentioned...
When you started your begonia rant, this was the first thing I thought of! Where did you grow up? Philadelphia?
Well, I grew up in northern New Mexico, but I got both of these from my dad, who grew up just about everywhere -- his dad was really good at negotiating, so the company sent him wherever there was a union dispute. One place my dad lived for a while was Scranton, Pa.
Alternative route -
Ships sail on the sea
Fishes live in the sea
Fishes have fins
the Finns fought the Russians
Russians are red
Fire engines are always rushin'
And that's why...
And it's always good to have an alternative route when navigating, right?
Q: Why do firemen wear red braces?
A: To stop their trousers falling down.....
Or, in American:
Q: Why do firefighters wear red suspenders?
A: To stop their pants falling down....
Who said fire engines are red?
Bonnie, thanks. I KNEW there were more links between the sea and the Russians, but I just couldn't remember them.
I first heard that joke back in my church-going childhood, when a minister told it as the lead-in to a sermon.
I have absolutely no recollection of what the rest of the sermon was about, but the joke stuck like gum to a shoe.
I probably started folding origami rabbits after the funny part was over.
How about that " Big Red Machine"
